David Rogers & Kairos: Bios

David Rogers (saxophones, composition) is an innovative composer and improviser whose music draws deeply on the jazz tradition and a range of other influences, from Latin dance rhythms to African folk songs. His music, heard from jazz clubs to Carnegie Hall, combines beautiful composed melodies and intricate group interplay with loose, fiery improvisation. Hailing from Missouri, Rogers has lived extensively in Ghana, played for many years on the New York jazz scene, and collaborated with jazz artists like Regina Carter and Craig Taborn, world music masters like Bernard Woma and Dolsi-naa Abubakari Lunna, and innovative chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound (“The future of classical music!” – The New York Times).

Ken Wessel (guitar) is a versatile, and soulful voice on the jazz guitar. Wessel worked with revolutionary jazz artist Ornette Coleman for over 12 years, including appearances with the New York Philharmonic and London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and on the critically acclaimed Polygram/Verve CD, Tone Dialing. He has fused jazz and North Indian music working with artists such as V.M. Bhatt, Debashish Bhattacharya, and his longtime collaborator, tabla drummer Badal Roy. Wessel has played with a wide range of jazz artists from Steve Turre and David Leibman, to Johnny Hartmann, appearing in 26 countries at major jazz festivals, concert halls and in radio and television.

Chris Lightcap (acoustic bass) is a lyrical and rhythmically-charged bass player, known for bridging the worlds of mainstream and avant garde jazz. He has recorded with a wide array of jazz stars including violinist Regina Carter, Tom Harrell, Marc Ribot, Craig Taborn, and Joe Morris among others. As a member of the Regina Carter Quartet, Lightcap has toured throughout four continents and been featured with various orchestras, including the Boston, Atlanta and Minnesota Symphonies. His two CD’s as a leader of his own group have received critical acclaim, with The New York Times calling Lightcap’s Lay Up, “one of the year’s winners.”

Sylvain Leroux (flute, alto saxophone) is a versatile and innovative wind player specializing in jazz flute, alto saxophone, and the Fulani flute of West Africa, the tambin. Drawing on years of study and performance in both the jazz and African music scenes, Sylvain brings a totally unique approach to improvising that owes as much to African griots as to post-bop and free jazz improvisers. Sylvain leads the Fula Flute Ensemble and the African Jazz group SOURCE. He has recorded with both these bands and with a wide range of world music artists including Michael Spiro, Dallam-Dougou, Nego Gato, Naby Camara, and Takadja Ñ (nominated for a Canadian Juno award).

Rob Garcia (drum set) is a thrilling and dynamic drummer whose career spans the entire spectrum of jazz, from Woody Allen's New Orleans band to Joseph Jarman’s avant-garde. His rhythmic creativity is in demand by many other jazz leaders, including Reggie Workman, Sonny Fortune, Chris Potter, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. Rob’s own recordings have been hailed for their “strength and beauty" (Cadence Magazine) and proof that “Garcia is a master of different moods!” (The Herald Sun). Rob has studied holistic healing and describes his creative aim in music's healing power, "music can go beyond the intellect and touch people on a very deep level."
